DESCRIPTION:"Early Mining in NY" Pomeroy Historic Marker Dedication (Rossie\, NY)\n\nThis ceremony commemorates the unveiling of the new Rossie Pomeroy Historic Marker celebrating New York's early mining industry. The dedication ceremony will be followed by a walking tour of the site led by John Austin and Carlene Bermann\, SLCCHC Executive Director. The tour includes the remains of the grist mill (1825)\, iron foundry\, machine shop (1840s)\, iron furnace (1813)\, and David Parish's land office (ca. 1812).\n\nThe ceremony is scheduled to begin at 10:00 AM at 4 Mill Rd\, Hammond\, NY 13646 (Lat. 44.380677717195\, Long. -75.653340349558). The marker is located near the Rossie Mill Ruins on Mill Rd a short dead-end road off of Brasie Corners-Rossie Rd / County Rd 8. Parking is available in the dirt lot or on the street nearby. You will see the ruins of one of the mill buildings behind a fence to your right as you pull in. There is also a large rock on the right side of the lot with a brass plaque that says\, "In Memory of Earl Cluckey."\n\nIf you have a suggestion for a historic marker\, please contact Carlene at carlene@slcha.org to discuss the criteria and proposal process.\n\n\n\nThe St. Lawrence County Center for History & Culture has collaborated with the Pomeroy Foundation for a few years to install historic markers in St. Lawrence County. In 2024\, they have secured funding for a historic marker for Hiram Bartlett in Russell\, NY at Balsam Cemetery and in  2025\, funding for a historic marker for the mining industry in Rossie\, NY.
