Battle of the Windmill Movie & Talk
Presented by: St. Lawrence County Historian Nancy LaFaver and City Historian Julie Madlin
The presentation will focus on the local people who were involved in the Battle of the Windmill, a significant event in Canadian history.
The highlight of the evening will be a screening of the documentary Land of a Thousand Sorrows Revisited, which tells the unknown and untold story of New York citizens captured in the 1838 Lower and Upper Canadian Rebellions, exiled to the penal colony of Australia from 1840 to 1860, and their legacy today.
The film has already been screened in various locations in North America, including Los Angeles, Alburgh (Vermont), Montreal, Ottawa, and Toronto, as well as in Australia and New Zealand. Written, produced, and directed by Deke Richards, the film sheds light on a little-known piece of history and reveals the fascinating connection between the United States, Canada, and Australia. Richards, who is a dual Australian/Canadian citizen, believes it is important to share the story of the American Patriots prisoners and their impact on the Australian constitution. The documentary was shot and edited by Samuel Pineault and co-produced by Karim Cheriguene.
