Cheese of the Month sampling in Potsdam

The Potsdam Food Co-op's featured Cheese of the Month for February is Whiteface Cheddar with Cranberry & Port Wine. Samples will be available on Friday, February 11th beginning at 12 noon and will continue while supplies last. Meier's Whiteface Cheddar with Cranberries is an artisan cheese made by Dan Meier at his farm in Fort Covington. Dan learned the art of cheesemaking as a boy growing up in Switzerland. He moved to North America in 1989 and eventually settled in the North Country. All of his artisanal cheeses are handmade using the milk of his own herd of dairy cows that are raised without growth hormones. Whiteface Cheddar with Cranberries is a medium cheddar, preservative-free, and aged about 3 months. Dan soaks dried cranberries in port wine and adds them to the cheese. This provides a visually appealing veining throughout. Suggestions: Whiteface Cheddar with Cranberries is perfect on a cheese board with nuts and dried fruit, or on its own served at room temperature. It would be an elegant addition to your favorite sandwich, or served as a dessert cheese.
