Description

Garden Tour: Bee Balm & Butterflies
Designing a Human & Animal-Friendly North Country Garden

Join Russell, NY resident Anne Csete in her 1-acre garden to learn about incorporating cold-hardy and heat-tolerant plants into your landscaping that also encourage birds, butterflies, and desired animal species, while deterring unwanted ones.

Experience Anne’s mid-summer garden in full bloom, a highlight of which is her stunning collection of daylilies. Her gardens incorporate natural and found elements, such as stones and branches relocated from other areas of her extensive property, which are used for decoration and as edging materials for her garden beds. She will also discuss creating and maintaining wildlife habitat, mixing herbaceous perennials and woody shrubs, and combining native and non-native plants, including some historic and medicinal varieties.

The tour will take place on garden paths, in Anne’s driveway, and on her lawn. Although no special clothing is required, we do encourage participants to dress appropriately for outdoor evening activities. Bug spray is also recommended. Most spaces are walker-friendly, but not all are wheelchair-accessible.

About Anne:
Anne Csete recently retired from St. Lawrence University, where she taught Asian history. She has been gardening at her home outside Russell for over 20 years and has been applying ecological gardening principles and techniques for the last ten years or so.

This garden tour is a fundraiser for SLCCHC’s Historic Garden Project at the Silas Wright House.
