Description

The Frederic Remington Art Museum invites the public to attend any of four ?One Hour One Work? sessions in the month of March. This ongoing program is a chance for participants to slow down and dive deep into a single work of art on display at the Remington Museum. In March, there will be four small-group opportunities to spend quality time with The Sun Dance. In each session, a Museum educator facilitates 60 minutes of focused looking, consideration, conversation, and interpretation of a single artwork. Four sessions are offered each month, with a different artwork featured each month.

In March, the featured artwork will be Frederic Remington?s 1909 oil painting, The Sun Dance. The program will be offered on the following dates and times: Wednesday, March 4 at 1:00 pm; Friday, March 13 at 1:00 pm; Thursday, March 19 at 2:00 pm; and Thursday, March 26 at 1:00 pm. The conversations will be facilitated by Museum educators Kathie Wade, Julie Pratt, Luanne Herzog, and Kari Terwilliger, respectively.

?This is a painting about which your views are almost certain to change as you spend time looking at and discussing it,? says Laura Desmond, Museum Education Specialist. ?Remington himself said the painting would ?give everyone the Horrors?, and this is often borne out when viewers first encounter the work. But its themes of self-sacrifice, the suffering body, and ritual unity are an integral part of the Western art tradition, and the more time you spend with the work, the more rich becomes your appreciation for what Remington attempted to do.?

The One Hour One Work program is free with admission to the Museum, but space is limited and reservations are requested, in order to facilitate close looking and ease of conversation.
