Oswegatchie River Water Chestnut Hand Pull
This event is led by the St. Lawrence Eastern Lake Ontario Partnership for Regional Invasive Species Management, or SLELO-PRISM.
Environmental Preservation
Make a difference in your community by joining a volunteer effort to remove invasive water chestnut from the Oswegatchie River. This event is open to all, and no experience is needed! Registration is required, and SLELO-PRISM encourages you to sign up early to secure your spot. This is a great opportunity to enjoy time on the water while contributing to the health of our environment.
Effects of Water Chestnuts
Water chestnut is an invasive aquatic species with significant environmental and economic impacts. It grows into thick, dense floating mats that crowd out native aquatic vegetation, restrict recreational activities, and reduce shoreline property values. It's hard, pointy seeds can even puncture tires or cause injuries if stepped on. If left unmanaged, the infestation of water chestnuts in the Oswegatchie River could spread to nearby waterbodies like Black Lake.
