Description

THE LIVES OF AMISH WOMEN
Dr. Johnson-Weiner will delve into her book, The Lives of Amish Women, and explore how Amish women’s lives have changed (or not) as Amish communities have responded to changing social conditions. Johnson-Weiner will examine the phrase, “Amish women,” suggesting multiple meanings, for despite the shared values of the Amish world, there is a growing diversity within it.

Dr. Karen Johnson-Weiner is a Distinguished Service Professor of Anthropology at SUNY Potsdam where she taught couses in linguistic anthropology. Johnson-Weiner has spent nearly 40 years exploring Amish life, language, faith, and culture. She is the author of Train up a Child: Old Order Amish and Mennonite Schools, New York Amish: Life in the Plain Communities of the Empire State, The Amish, and her most recent book, the feature of this talk, The Lives of Amish Women.
